Your writer’s hat

How many times have you heard someone say that they’re a waiter or a shop assistant but that they would love to be a full time writer? Is that you? Don’t wear the waiter hat, wear the writer’s hat.

An actor between jobs is still an actor. They may wait tables or wash cars or deliver pizza but in their heart and mind they are an actor, they are acting the part of a waiter or a dog walker.

You are a writer and that is your real job. Anything else you do is only to make money so that you can live to write. In the meantime, view every hour on the job as your opportunity to learn more about how the world works and the crazy, sad, mad, wonderful things that people do every day. Eavesdrop on conversations while commuting or in coffee shops. Ask random strangers questions to start conversations. Write every day.

Develop your unique voice. Get good at it and one day you’ll write to live.
