Writing from a male point of view (POV)

When we think of what drives male behaviour we often think of testosterone driven toxic masculinity and if you’re writing this type of story that may be appropriate, but for most males they act and react many times in much the same way as women. He doesn’t have to intimidate other people, unless they get in his way. But he does need to be consistent in his behaviour.

So how do we differentiate the voice of our male characters without getting into strong versus weak personas?

First of all, is the male the protagonist or antagonist? If he’s the lead character you’ll need to craft his personality carefully. What are his qualities? Why is he special? Does he have failings that can be considered fatal or can they be corrected? Does he have any endearing habits? Don’t fall back on stereotypes especially when describing how he looks. Not all heroes have muscles.

If your male character is a love interest think about him doing everything he can to impress the desired partner. Isn’t that what usually happens with flirting ? It doesn’t have to be all look at me actions but can be subtle, for example, by having a thoughtful side, or allow him to seek approval from the love interest.

What does he want? Does he want the girl, the job or freedom or all three? Let him face challenges and succeed or fail but always make him genuine by being consistent in his actions. Make him believable by avoiding stereotypes and clichés, and then he’ll be unforgettable.
