First and last
Writing each chapter takes us on a journey. When we set out we want to get from where we are to the end. One way to do this is to write the first sentence or paragraph of the chapter and also the last sentence or paragraph. We can use this much like a map or a GPS to guide us from the beginning via the scenic route to the end.
There may be a few deviations from what we first thought: there will probably be some dramas, maybe a few resolutions, some of the characters on the journey may not be there at the end. But we’ve determined at the outset to know pretty much where, what and who will be present at the final outcome. And if the first and last sentences are changed in the process, the chapter will be stronger for it.
This concept is also a great option for a competition short story with a set word count. Rather than flailing around trying to tame the narrative into set bounds, the first and last method gives the route direction for the journey.
