Beware the P Word

Does everything have to be perfect before you sit down to write?

Creativity has been described as dependent on process, product, person and place. As writers we can get stuck at the first hurdle — process, when another P word gets in the way — procrastination.

Does everything have to be just so:  the desk tidy, the fridge defrosted, once all that’s done, then you’ll be ready to write? If so, it could be impossible to find the right time. Procrastination can be a safety net.

If you wait for the right inspiration to write you could be waiting a long time too. Don’t worry if it’s not good, you’ll probably have to get all the ordinary stuff out before anything worthwhile will flow. Don’t let your process get caught at the first hurdle.

Write every day, desk tidy or not!
